Cycling camp etiquette: enhancing your experience on two wheels

BaseCamp camps offer a unique opportunity for cyclists to immerse themselves in their passion, surrounded by like-minded individuals, beautiful landscapes, and expert guidance. However, as with any communal activity, adhering to proper rider etiquette is essential to ensuring a positive experience for all participants. Here's a guide to cyclist etiquette to keep in mind while attending a cycling camp.

The camp ride mentality

Camp is not a race. We offer numerous ride groups to allow you to challenge your fitness or just enjoy the day, but please remember the goal is to be safe and have fun.

Select the right ride group for you

Every cyclist has a different skill level and fitness level, so we offer four different paced rides each day. Please select the group that best represents your ability and fitness, and respect the pace set by the camp organizers and ride leaders. Again, it's not a race; it's an opportunity to improve, learn, and enjoy the ride together.

Load the route to your device

Navigation has never been easier! We ask (require) that all riders load the day's route and run active navigation if possible. This actually increases the safety of the group, as your device will alert you about upcoming turns and potential obstacles.

Communicate effectively

Clear communication is key when riding in a group. Use hand signals and verbal cues to alert others of hazards, upcoming turns, or changes in pace. If you need to stop or slow down, signal your intentions early to avoid causing confusion or potential collisions.

Maintain group cohesion

Stay together as a group whenever possible; avoid surging ahead or falling behind without reason. If you notice a gap forming, adjust your pace to close it and ensure that no rider gets left behind. Remember, the group's safety and enjoyment are paramount.

Be mindful of others

Respect your fellow cyclists and the environment. Avoid sudden movements or erratic behavior that could startle other riders. If you see a rider struggling with this mindfulness, please inform the ride leader. Additionally, be courteous to pedestrians, motorists, and other road users encountered during the ride. Leave no trace behind, and always follow the principles of responsible cycling.

Support and encourage

Cycling camps are about camaraderie and mutual support. Offer words of encouragement to fellow riders, particularly during challenging segments. If someone is struggling, lend a helping hand or offer words of advice. Remember, we all started somewhere, and your support could make a significant difference to someone's experience.

Embrace the learning experience

Our camps include workshops, skills sessions, and opportunities for feedback from experienced coaches; approach these activities with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Take advantage of the expertise available to improve your technique, fitness, and overall cycling proficiency.

Have fun and stay positive

Above all, remember to have fun and maintain a positive attitude. Cycling camps are about more than just logging miles; they're about forging connections, experiencing new challenges, and creating lasting memories. Embrace the journey, enjoy the scenery, and savor the camaraderie of fellow cyclists.

By adhering to these guidelines, you'll not only enhance your own experience at the cycling camp, but also contribute to a welcoming and supportive environment for all participants. So clip in, pedal on, and enjoy the ride!
