The sun is shining and you want to ride outdoors, but you have a structured workout on your calendar. No worries! You can do it outside! Structured workouts don’t have to be done on the trainer, and they don’t have to be perfect.
I was presented with this exact situation yesterday and thought it would be a great example of a case study for those of you who are saying, "I haven’t been riding outside because I have structured workouts on the schedule."

When looking at a workout and determining how to do it outdoors, first ask yourself: What is the intent of this workout? What are the goals, and how can I plan a route that will allow me to execute these goals?
The purpose of this particular workout was to get in some long tempo blocks and to finish strong.
Block 1: 45 minutes alternating between 195 and 220 watts. Want to do it outside? How about 45 minutes at 205-210 watts?
Block 2: 30 minutes building from 185 to 220 watts. Want to do it outside? How about 7.5-minute intervals at 185, 195, 205, and 220 watts?
Next time the sun is calling your name, answer with a YES! Get outside and see how it goes!
