How to download the Spain Garmin background map for riding in Mallorca

It's important to be able to run navigation at our cycling camp camp in Mallorca, Spain, just in case you somehow get separated from the group. This happens only once or twice a year, but we want everyone to be prepared regardless. For your Garmin navigation to work correctly, you will need to download a Spain background map. This is an easy process, but it can be confusing at first, so in an effort to make it simpler, we've linked the background map and developed this simple walkthrough for Garmin devices. Here's how.

  1. Click here to download the map and save it to your desktop. The file format is gmasupp, and you will not be able to open it on your computer, but that's okay.

  2. Connect your Garmin device to your computer via USB cable and wait for it to connect. Use a file explorer to locate  the Garmin device and the Garmin folder (pictured below.

3. From your desktop, drag or copy the gmapsupp file into the  Garmin folder.

4. Eject your Garmin and shut it down.

If you want to test the map, load this test route from Mallorca, restart your Garmin, and then select NAVIGATION > Saved Courses> A  Day at the Track> Ride. When it loads, select View Map.

If you are downloading the test route (or any route) file as TCX, you need to drag and drop it into the the NEW FILES folder. To access this folder, plug in your Garmin device, navigate to it and select the device: >DEVICE NAME>GARMIN FOLDER>NEW FILES FOLDER and drag and drop the TCX route file into the NEW FILES FOLDER.
