My athletic journey started on a BMX bike as a kid and never really stopped. From BMX gate starts to high school strength and plyometric training, collegiate track and field at SUNY Brockport, mountain bike racing, road racing, cyclocross, gravel, and even a little triathlon, I have always been fascinated by the process of getting stronger, faster, and more capable.
That curiosity ultimately led me to earn a degree in Exercise Science and build a career as a personal trainer. For more than 30 years, I've worked with a wide range of athletes and individuals, from pre-teens to seniors, first-time exercisers to competitive athletes. Through all of those experiences, one lesson has remained constant: successful coaching starts with meeting people where they are and helping them move forward from there.
Today, I continue to race and train, primarily focusing on mountain bike and cyclocross disciplines. I remain just as passionate about learning, testing, and refining training methods as I was when I first started. Whether through personal experience, continuing education, or data analysis, I am always looking for better ways to help athletes perform at their best.
My coaching philosophy is built on collaboration, flexibility, and practical problem solving. Every athlete is different, and every training tool, whether it's a workout, drill, training block, or recovery strategy, comes with its own benefits and tradeoffs. I believe great coaching comes from combining data, experience, creativity, and open communication to find the right approach for each individual athlete.
One concept I strongly believe in is the "Good-Better-Best" approach. Life is busy. Careers, families, travel, and unexpected challenges can make the "perfect" training week unrealistic. Instead of chasing perfection, we focus on making the best decision possible for your situation. With good communication and a flexible plan, we can continue making progress even when life gets complicated.
As a longtime BaseCamp athlete myself, I have experienced firsthand the power of this community; the combination of science-based coaching, education, accountability, and a supportive group of athletes creates an environment where people can improve, stay motivated, and genuinely enjoy the process.
The training is excellent, but the people are what make it special. Basecamp is very much a balanced approach with education, high-level training concepts, and a tremendous community keeping it fun, quirky, and occasionally a little weird, and I definitely participate. If you enjoy doing things a bit differently, I may be the coach for you.
As both an athlete and coach, I believe you can pursue meaningful goals, enjoy the process, and stay true to who you are.
Whether you're training for your first event, chasing a personal best, or looking to reach a new level of performance, I look forward to helping you train smart, get faster, and enjoy the journey along the way.
