DataSmart is a set of analysis tools built for BaseCamp coaches. The tools give our coaches faster, deeper analysis of athlete data so they can spend their time doing what great coaches do: understanding the athlete, interpreting the numbers, making the call, and guiding the work.

BaseCamp Endurance Coaching formally announces DataSmart, a purpose-built AI-supported system designed to help experienced coaches analyze more information, identify meaningful patterns, and make better-informed decisions for athletes.
DataSmart is not a general-purpose AI chatbot, and it is not an automated coaching platform. It is a specialized set of coaching tools developed around BaseCamp’s coaching philosophy, performance language, analytical methods, exercise-physiology principles, and athlete-development process.
“There is a major difference between uploading data into a general AI platform and using an AI tool that has been specifically built for coaching,” said Tim Cusick, Head Coach of BaseCamp Endurance Coaching and Product Leader for TrainingPeaks WKO. “A general AI system may be able to summarize information, but it does not automatically understand how BaseCamp evaluates an athlete, prioritizes goals, interprets training history, or connects analysis to the coaching process.”
Cusick’s background in advanced performance analytics and his leadership of the WKO product have placed him at the intersection of coaching, athlete data, and applied sports science. Head Coach Dr. Namrita Brooke contributes the exercise-physiology framework behind the tools to ensure that the analysis reflects sound principles of adaptation, recovery, training response, and athlete development.
“We are combining advanced analytics with exercise physiology, then placing both in the hands of experienced coaches who understand the athlete as a person,” Cusick said.

It cannot fully understand the athlete behind the numbers — the goals, motivation, confidence, schedule, stress, and life circumstances that shape what training should look like next. Those remain the responsibilities of the coach.
“Our goal is not to create AI coaching,” Cusick said. “Our goal is to create better human coaching by giving expert coaches better tools.”
