How to combine workout files

Sometimes we want to combine two or three ride files into one, such as when we do a warmup before a Zwift ride, need to stop riding to briefly troubleshoot a tech issue and then reset the ride, or even execute a ride on two platforms (for example, a group workout on Zwift and some Endurance on TrainingPeaks Virtual). Although the TrainingPeaks app does not have a way to easily combine ride files, there is a great site called FIT File Tools that lets us do this quite easily.

One caveat: We do not recommend combining rides that were done at different times of the day; please leave these as the separate rides that they are.

Here's how to combine two workout files:

  1. Download both rides from TrainingPeaks: Open the ride, click "Files" in the top right corner, and click download.

  2. Unzip the workout files if necessary and make sure the file type is .fit.

  3. Visit fitfiletools.com and click "Launch" under File Combiner.

  4. Drag the unzipped workout files into the upload box in the FIT File Tools window.

  5. Click "Go."

  6. When the process finishes, download your new, combined file!

  7. In TrainingPeaks, delete the old ride files (not the whole workout!): Open the workout(s), click on "Files" in the upper right corner, and click "Delete." (Don't worry, since you previously downloaded the files, we know they are saved, just in case.)

  8. Drag the new combined workout file from your computer into the TrainingPeaks window. If it doesn't automatically link with the planned workout when it imports, you can pair it manually (click here for instructions).

Voilà! It sounds complicated, but we promise once you do it once or twice, it'll take you just a minute or two.
