Cycling Coach Review of Fluid Performance: How It Fits My Fueling
A sports drink can look good on paper, but I learn the most about it through repeated use on the bike. Does it sit well when I am riding hard? Do I still want to drink it several hours into a ride? Can I adjust the carbohydrate concentration to match the day without losing the qualities I enjoy?
Fluid Performance has been a strong fit for me in those practical areas. Its lighter flavor, comfortable fueling, and flexibility have made it a product I enjoy using across different training demands. In this review, I want to explain what stands out and why those qualities matter to me, so you can decide whether they match what you want in your bottle.

What Matters to Me
If you have read my other reviews, you know I like to start with what I am looking for. Understanding my priorities gives you some context for my opinions and helps you decide how much they apply to your own riding.
I am not trying to give every product a good or bad label, or a pass or fail. I am sharing how it compares to what I want, based on my experience using it. Your priorities might be different, and that can reasonably lead you to a different choice. My goal is to give you useful information to help make that decision.
For a sports drink, I focus on three things:
Drink concentration and personal fit: How the formula supports my fueling needs and agrees with my gut, including at higher carbohydrate concentrations. I use my personal feeling / gut tolerance here not the official number.
Flavor intensity: Enough flavor to enjoy drinking, while staying light enough to remain appealing throughout the ride.
Formulation and quality assurance: A purposeful mix of quality ingredients, supported by credible verification of the finished product.
Drink Concentration and Personal Fit
One of my first considerations is osmolality. In practical terms, I care about how the drink is formulated and how comfortably I can consume it at the carbohydrate concentration I want.
Concentration alone does not tell us a drink’s osmolality. The type of carbohydrate and the other dissolved ingredients matter, too. My evaluation brings that product design together with something I have learned through years of riding: what works for my gut.
For racing and hard training rides, my typical upper concentration is 10 grams of carbohydrate per 100 mL of water. That means 50 grams in a 500 mL bottle or 75 grams in a 750 mL bottle. This is my upper "bottle" target for those demanding rides. My everyday bottles vary with the training. Fluid nails this for me. Even at that concentration, it sits well, and I have not experienced a hint of GI discomfort from it. I can consume the carbohydrate I planned without my stomach becoming part of the conversation.
I am not measuring Fluid’s osmolality in a laboratory. I am assessing how its formula works for me at the concentrations I use. Product design matters, and so does my known tolerance. For my needs, Fluid gets that combination right.
Flavor That Keeps Me Drinking
On a flavor intensity scale where 1 is very light and 10 is very strong, I am looking for something around a 4. I want a flavor I enjoy, with enough presence to make the drink appealing throughout a ride.
Fluid’s lighter flavor approach lands right where I want it. What particularly stands out is how consistently that approach carries across its flavor range. I have used plenty of sports drinks where one flavor is light and another is much heavier. That might seem like a small detail, but it affects which ones I want to drink. I end up limited to one or two flavors, and over time that gets boring. There is some variation across flavors but the range is "tighter" than most.
With Fluid, I use the full range. I can change flavors while keeping the lighter profile I prefer. That gives me variety without compromising the quality that makes the drink appealing to me in the first place.
Taste is personal, but it has a practical role in fueling. A drink needs to remain appealing enough that I keep reaching for the bottle. Fluid does that well.
Formulation and Quality Assurance
Quality has two parts for me. I want a formula that makes sense for the job, and I want confidence in the ingredients and the finished product.
Fluid’s carbohydrate and electrolyte mix fits my needs well. Its formula combines glucose derived from complex carbohydrates with fructose, alongside sodium and other electrolytes. For my riding, it provides a useful foundation that I can adjust to the demands of the day.
On hot days, I sometimes add extra sodium through Fluid’s Tactical products. That is part of tailoring my fueling and hydration to the conditions. I appreciate having a base formula that works for me, with the flexibility to make that adjustment.
The assurance behind the formula matters, too. Fluid Performance is included in Fluid’s Informed Sport certification, which means every batch is independently tested for banned substances before release. That carries weight with me. A well-designed formula is one part of quality; independent testing adds accountability and another layer of confidence in the product. Banned substance testing serves a specific purpose, and I value the commitment to testing every batch.
Sports drinks are something I consume repeatedly throughout training and racing. Knowing what I am putting into my body, and understanding the verification behind it, is part of my purchasing decision.
Personal Thoughts
I also appreciate what Fluid contributes beyond the product. Richard Smith and his team support firefighters directly, including developing their Tactical hydration line around the needs of wildland firefighters working in demanding conditions. They have also supported Fire Velo for more than a decade, helping fuel rides that honor fallen firefighters and raise funds for firefighter families and cancer support programs.
Alongside that commitment, Fluid supports the broader cycling community through athletes, coaching programs, camps, and events. Companies that do good things to help our society resonate with me. When a product works well for my riding and the people behind it contribute in meaningful ways, that adds value to my decision to support them.
Extra: A Cold Weather Favorite
This is a review of Fluid Performance, but I have to give their Recovery drink mix a little love also. All the flavors work for me, but Cinnamon Vanilla has become my cold weather and holiday favorite. I actually look forward to December rides knowing it is waiting afterward. After riding in the cold, I mix it up and warm it in the microwave. Sometimes I add a little of their Chocolate Recovery mix, too. The result is a warm recovery drink that tastes fantastic and just feels right during the winter and holiday season. A small pleasure, maybe, but one I look forward to after a cold day on the bike.

My Recommendation
Fluid Performance earns a strong recommendation from me. It delivers on the things I value most: comfortable fueling at the concentrations I use, a lighter flavor across a range I enjoy, and a purposeful formula backed by independent batch testing.
If those priorities sound like yours, I would encourage you to try it in training and see how it fits. I have confidence in what goes into my bottle, I enjoy drinking it, and it works well for my gut. Add a company whose commitment to cycling and firefighters I respect, and Fluid is an easy choice for me.
