Pete's story: Bike Hut Classic

BaseCamp athlete Pete Chargin shared his experience at the 2026 Bike Hut Classic bike race in California.

This is my favorite event. It's put on by Abundant Grace, and it's a win in at least three ways. First of all, it supports the Bike Hut, which is a classic refreshment point for cyclists on and near the coast. There is always water and snacks, and it's been a shelter for more than one poor rider caught in a downpour. Second, it supports the Potrero Nuevo Farm, which purposely provides employment and training for out-of-work farmhands in the area. This is a great way to support seasonal workers who are trying to support their families. Finally, all the food raised on the farm is distributed free of charge to low-income families in the area. How great is that?

Plus, of course, it's an awesome ride up from the coast through the redwoods to the top of the ridge. It’s a great three-part climb that challenges everyone to be their best. The first part is a gradual climb and is draftable. The middle few miles are somewhat steep and tough. The last few miles are not steep, but do you have anything left in the tank? Luckily, with help from BaseCamp and my great coach, Brian Hammond, I was able to set a PR. I was far from winning, but that's okay, because it was still a big win all around.
