Bob's story: The Rift
BaseCamp athlete Bob Cuccaro shared his experience at the 2026 The Rift bike race in Iceland.
The Rift 60k was the best event of the year. It included a vacation/ anniversary trip, along with an approx 40-mile ride in Southern Iceland. I originally signed up for the longer event, but after careful consideration - not bailing on my wife for a few extra hours; I decided to cut the ride to the shorter route. I was totally prepared for the ride, other than having to wear many layers; I was acclimated to 90 degrees, not below 50. Course was absolutely beautiful and manageable with the Lauf Seigla Ultimate with 57s dropped down to 25/28 psi. Shipping the bike was a breeze with the assistance of Kae at Lauf. Weather was cold, humid, and had a little rain on the way back. I took it a little slower on the way out to get used to the terrain, which is okay as long as you bring big tires. I saw many flats with 40s. On the way back, I was able to push Tempo and higher, since I could remember some of the route. Water crossings: walked one and rode one. I wasn’t interested in face planting over a rock. 😆 This is a bucket-list gravel ride for everyone. You can make it a combo trip and still have enough energy to sightseeing after the ride….and have a few hotdogs. 🙂
