Dennis's story: Gravel Worlds

Updated: Aug 26, 2025

BaseCamp athlete Dennis Wojcik shared his experience at the 2025 Lauf Gravel Worlds bike race in Nebraska.

I needed that…..

After some stressful weeks at work, I was really looking forward to Gravel Worlds. It was such a pleasure to hang out at the Lauf tent with my fellow BaseCamp teammates. Thank you Kae Takeshita and the Lauf team for the hospitality. I also really enjoyed the shakeout rides and the coaches panel. Both reduced the pre race jitters and let me focus.

For me the race was great. I wanted to do the first hour at Sweet Spot and find a group. After that it was Tempo with the group until the end, where I would just empty the tank. I was able to achieve this and was surprised how good I felt even though at times the matchbook was on fire. Special thanks to coach Jim Pomeroy for preparing me physically and mentally. In the end I met my goal and crossed the line at the time I was shooting for (5:01:24). It was nice crossing the line with Tina Hart cheering. Thanks, that was special!

Things I'll take away for the next event: I didn't fuel according to plan. Ate less chews but a bit more gel. The Hammer gel in flasks worked great with no mess. Overall need to ensure I eat!!! Hydration was spot on. For me the 2L USWE was perfect. Ice is your friend. My knee was sore after and stiffened up in the hours after the race. Some ice and elevation helped a lot. Lastly, the BaseCamp community was engaging, supportive, and welcoming. I truly feel like I belong. Thank you Tim Cusick and all the coaches and staff for what you've created!

Nationals next…..
