Den's story: Lifeline 100
BaseCamp athlete Den Scanlon shared his experience at the 2026 Lifeline 100 bike ride in Maryland.
If BaseCamp has taught me anything, it is that consistency pays. My goal on work days I schedule at least an hour on the bike and, when I must be off the bike, I also try to let no more than 3 days pass before getting back to it. The Lifeline ride is our very local ride that donates to numerous organizations in the county. This past Sunday, in the face of the Maryland Mist (think soaked to the bone!), I really wanted to stay indoors where it was dry, warm, and my bike was clean. But...consistency pays.
By the time we got to the start line, the mist was turning to rain. And it continued all day long. Every road was one I've traversed by bike numerous times in better conditions and sometimes in worse. Wet was the word of the day, and this ride was all about Just Doing the Work. Had I stayed inside, I would have missed a really good experience on this ride. The food at the rest stops was some of the best, if not THE best, ever at a bike event. Warm cinnamon muffins at stop 1, amazing olive and tomato wraps with balsamic vinegar dressing at stop 2, roasted potatoes at stop 3, and tomato-mozzarella sandwiches at the finish. All consumed without guilt in the spirit of the excellent nutritional advice provided by Coach Namrita to eat enough to fuel our rides. I may have placed first in my age group for calories consumed on this one!
