As the days grow longer and the weather turns warmer, many athletes find themselves reflecting on the progress they've made since winter training and often also recognizing that their once-consistent routines have slipped. This shift is natural, but it's also a pivotal moment in the training journey.

Progression: With consistency and rhythm in place, progressive overload becomes effective. This is how we build fitness, strength, speed, and durability over time. Progression only works when the base is solid.

Why Spring Disrupts Consistency
Many athletes experience a post-winter slump, not because they've lost motivation, but because life changes in spring. Schedule Workouts Just Like Meetings
The number one tool for rebuilding consistency is simply putting workouts on the calendar. Block off specific times, protect them like you would any work meeting, and set reminders. When training is part of your schedule, it becomes part of your life. If you use a calendar like Outlook or Google, put the workouts on the calendar.
Focus on Process Goals
Shift your mindset from outcome-based approach (like FTP or race performance) to daily process goals (like completing four workouts/rides this week or doing mobility work). Process goals are more controllable and help build momentum over time. Measure the process results by totaling things like workout days planned vs. achieved, not specific numbers.
Limit the All-or-Nothing Mentality
Consistency doesn't mean perfection. Missing a workout doesn't mean the week is lost. Embrace a "something is better than nothing" approach and remember that short rides, adjusted efforts, and active recovery all keep the habit alive.
Prepare the Night Before
Lay out your kit, prep your bottles, charge your devices, and review workout details the evening before. Removing morning friction reduces excuses and increases the likelihood you'll follow through.
Reduce Daily Decision Fatigue
Plan ahead to remove small, daily decisions that can derail consistency. At the start of each week, choose your workout routes, prep the right bike, and organize your gear. The fewer decisions you need to make before training, the more likely you are to actually do it.
