BaseCamp athlete Beth Huffaker shared her experience at the 2026 Lizard Under the Skillet bike race in Kansas.

A fun day getting my long ride in with snack stops along the way! I needed a long ride, so I rode the 31st annual Lizard Under the Skillet Godzilla distance at just over 65 miles, a ride put on by the Lawrence Bicycle Club. I was hoping to get some paceline practice in, but that didn't work out, and I rode solo most of the way. I ride gravel for the most part, so this was a good event for me to see what the roads are like over in the next county. It wasn't bad; even the roads with no shoulders didn't have much traffic. I'll feel comfortable riding them this winter when I need a trainer break! There were SAG stops every 15 miles or so, but I only stopped at the last two. I learned that I must have an iron gut when I decided to have a root beer float at the last stop. I only had 8 miles to go, so WTH, and I rode my fasted 100k to date!
Training with both of my BaseCamp coaches, Jill Gass and Menachem Brodie, is paying off! Also, I missed the lizards, so this picture is AI me with them in the background! That counts, right? 😊
