Dennis's story: FoCo Fondo

BaseCamp athlete Dennis Wojcik shared his experience at the 2025 FoCo Fondo in Colorado.

FoCo Fondo…..or how I learned to love the heat! 93 degrees and 50-60% humidity. For this sea level BaseCamper it was a challenging combination.

Did the 62 mile Double Dare You course and finished in 3:55:38. Good enough for 142 out of 678 overall and 23rd out of 83 in my age group. Given this wasn’t an A race for me and more of an excuse to visit my kids (😀) I am happy.

I did get to practice my hydration (2L USWE and 2 24 oz bottles of Skratch plus one bottle refill at a rest stop. Food was harder but did get in a bag of chews and 3 gels.

For the race it was a narrow slow start. My goal was to make the lead group and I burned some matches to get there. I stayed with them for a bit but hit my limit. I bounced between some small groups but it was hard to find a group to work with. I am sure that would have made life better.

I did start to cramp up at 40 miles but controllable. If I stood to climb I would blow up or if I pushed too hard seated I would blow as well but I could hold a decent tempo pace. I chalk this up to conditioning and hydration.

Thanks, Jim Pomeroy and the BaseCamp community, for getting me ready.
