Den's story: Appalachian Journey

BaseCamp athlete Den Scanlon shared his experience at the 2026 Appalachian Journey bike race in Virginia with his wife, Shannon.

The Appalachian Journey is a favorite event. The scenery, the riding, and the vibe are second to none when it comes to riding in Virginia. We undertook the ride to better our time last year and continue our belief that we are "better together." Mission accomplished on all fronts. The climbing was challenging and very rewarding when sitting at the van after the event. Thanks to Gordon W. Wadsworth and Emily for putting on such a great event. My BaseCamp training has helped me increase my overall fitness every year. The proof of that is that I was 12 minutes faster this year than last year over this very challenging course.
