Den's story: Six Pillars Century

BaseCamp athlete Den Scanlon shared his experience at the 2026 Six Pillars Century bike ride in Maryland.

The Six Pillars Century was about exploration, not results. It was also a chance to meet up with fellow BaseCamper Damon Gunther. The event is dead flat and includes large portions of the Blackwater National Refuge. Damon, Jerry, and I rolled out with the intent of a solid effort of around 5-6 hours. A very strong headwind for the first 50 miles made for some spicy efforts. At the 50-mile aid station, Damon's wife, Susan, was there as a volunteer; after a quick snack, we set out to enjoy 50 miles of tailwind. The weather was delightfully cool, the views of the Chesapeake Bay were fantastic, and the company was great. This spring I have been concentrating on durability, and the BaseCamp winter training really delivered a great foundation for the coming season.
