Gary's story: Gravel Worlds

BaseCamp athlete Gary Wenzl shared his experience at the 2026 Gravel Worlds bike race in Nebraska.

My coach Jim Rudberg nailed my training for this race. Other than getting distracted and having some pre-race obstacles to overcome and of course my typical inner thigh cramps, the race went every well and was lots of fun! Roads were fast, wind was gentle, and the route was really fun. It poured rain on me all the way to Lincoln, but luckily the race route wasn’t affected. I felt strong and taking Tim’s advice and be very diligent staying in the zones Coach Jim trained me in. I was passing others in the last half without increasing my power.
