Lynn's story: Mid-State Gravel Grinder

BaseCamp athlete Lynn Botelho shared her experience at the 2026 Mid-State Gravel Grinder bike race in Pennsylvania.

46.75 miles and 4,113 feet of gain.

The deets: I started off with the speedy kids, as is my way, but settled into my own pace sooner than usual. I knew I had one woman ahead of me. Next thing I know, I have a youngster on my wheel and staying there. I tried to drop her on the descents by grabbing the wheel of some fast boys, but eventually she and another woman caught up. We rode as a small group -- but not really sharing the work. Grrrr. After what felt like a lifetime, I dropped off the back to just ride my race. Five miles or so from the end, I caught up with one of the women at the end of that-always-a-joy Tram Road descent. I got played and she slingshotted off on an attack. There is so much for me to learn! I didn't respond in time, and well -- I was the 3rd woman over the line and only 20 seconds behind. To her credit, she turned herself inside for those final miles. I did have a good giggle, as I think there is a good 40 years of an age gap!

This great day on the bike is thanks my amazing coach, Maia Paris. Somehow she always manages to bring all the pieces of my busy life together with just the right build. Thanks, Coach!
