Ryan's story: Old Man Winter

BaseCamp athlete Ryan Kabat shared his experience at the 2025 Old Man Winter event in Lyons, Colorado.

The event was incredibly fun and well-organized. I participated in the 40-mile ride and experienced great conditions and scenery for almost the entire day. The course was beautiful and almost completely dry and smooth sailing.

High wind warnings were issued just prior to the race, forecasting gusts of 75+ mph. Those gusts were kind enough to hold off until later than expected, thankfully, but did not mess around once they arrived. The last five miles was 0-3% grade into the wind. It felt so similar to lower cadence intervals, so I just ground it out to the finish. This small blip in the day did not dampen my spirits, but did cut the post-race revelry short.

Very grateful for how prepared I felt due to my commitment to Basecamp this year. My mindset has shifted in the right direction over the past year and I felt physically prepared for an event for the first time I can ever remember. The Basecamp training and community made it relatively easy to be prepared for an event at this time of year.
