Sue's story: Homestead Cycling Tour

BaseCamp athlete Sue Hageman shared her experience at the 2026 Homestead Cycling Tour bike ride in Nebraska.

Back to Nebraska again this weekend. We did the Homestead Trail fundraiser ride. The last couple of years they have added a gravel section, yippee!!! The high for the day was predicted 97 degrees and WINDY. Fortunately, we started at 7:30am, and the sky was full of clouds, which kept it cooler!!! By the time we left Beatrice, it was getting HOT and WINDY. We really lucked out for GW the week before!!!

The trail was fast, and I pushed it. Once we got on the gravel, the roads were really nice. We had a few MMRs that were not too bad but hit a couple miles of really sandy roads. We stopped for donuts at the first aid station and cookies at the next one. More trail and then more gravel. The last 6.7 miles was back on the trail, and we flew to the finish!! My mantra: I have trained for this, and I am strong…………. At the finish line was another food reward, pie!! Pie and gravel are kind of a thing around the midwest lol.

Thanks so much to Menachem for getting me ready for back-to-back events!! Stronger every week!!!
