Sue's story: Unbound Gravel 2022

BaseCamp alumnus Sue Hageman shared her experience at Unbound Gravel 2022.

Unbound! Full of adventures & fun & surprises!! First started with meeting T.J. Morton & doing a ride around our place a few days before the big ride. Then met Amber Neben and got to chat with her for a bit! Basecampers are great people. I ran into one other on Friday.

We rode with our son, daughter-in-law, & nephew. Well, Lauren and I started with them at the start line. BTW she's pregnant. I’m going to be a grandma. It was the little one's "first race."

It was a beautiful start. Nice and cool. No winds and awesome smooth roads. Rains were supposed to hold off till afternoon. Was hoping to be done way before they started. Then we hit the tower hills. At the top you could see the dark clouds and rains coming. I should have taken a picture. It was breathtaking.

As we rolled down the other side it started to rain. We got to the SAG stop and it literally started raining buckets with lighting & thunder. We stayed there with lots of other riders for about 15-20 minutes. We took off and the rains never let up until about the last 10 miles.

I felt great despite cold hands during the downpours. I could have been better hydrated & ate more but hard to do when it's raining & you just want to be done.

Each & every gravel ride is an adventure in its own. Different every time. Many lessons learned & memories made. That's what it's all about. Emporia keeps stepping up their game.

Till next ride and adventure! Keep training where you belong!!
