Tracy's story: Gorge Gravel

BaseCamp athlete Tracy Ellwein shared her experience at the 2026 Gorge Gravel bike race in Oregon.

Majestic views and a perfect weather day greeted 500+ riders for the 14th annual Gorge Gravel Grinder on April 26 in Dufur, OR. A new route drew me out for my 6th time here racing. I did the medium course, which registered 64 miles and 5900 feet. After a screaming hot start for nearly an hour, the groups separated on an 18-mile climb at 3-4% grade, followed by a 10-mile decent on pavement. Another 5-mile climb of 5% range was a hard push. The masters women field of 22 was deep with strong riders, several that passed me on the long climb. My race smarts to use wheels, catch wheels, and tuck in helped to conserve. My fueling plan was spot on at 95 carbs/hr. My pivotal point was at mile 51, where I pushed hard to get on a wheel near top of a climb (dig-push), as I had to decide if I go for it or not and if I would have regrets if I didn't try. I followed the other woman rider for several miles, resting and waiting (narrowing the odds), and then on the final crest, I pulled by, downshifted, and pushed to the finish. Was very strong start to finish with my 4:10 race time, landing me 3rd in AG and 6/56 gender. My durability, fatigue resistance, and cadence versatility all influenced my performance. Also fun seeing and meeting many Base Campers, ❤️ the community.
