BaseCamp alum Beth Huffaker shared her experience at the 2023 Open Range Gravel Race in south-central Kansas.
Lordy that was hard! I finished Open Range 100k today and let me tell you, I now know for 100 percent that Kansas ain't flat! It was like riding on a beach, uphill with a 20-30 mph headwind all day! First half I stopped to take a few pics, second half was like just get me out of these hills and this wind! Twelve miles left to go I collapsed for a few minutes in an old cemetery and thought…this wouldn’t be a bad place to end up. There was a nice view and a cool breeze. Lol!! Anyway, I made it but not sure I would try it again!
