BaseCamp athlete Jaime Baeza shared her experience at the 2025 Lighthouse Century bike ride in California.
Yesterday I rode the Lighthouse 75 mile route along Highway 1. I liked how they did a staggered self start, giving each distance a one hour window to start, and it spread out the hundreds of riders on the shoulder of the road really well. It also made for a more relaxed morning of getting ready, since you didn’t have to worry about being late. It started in Morro Bay and went north, past the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse, and back. There was a century route that also turned off and climbed a mountain highway, but that didn't sound like my idea of a good time, so I signed up for the next longest distance. It was a beautiful day with clouds protecting us from the sun all day and perfect temperatures. At one point the marine layer hit us and I really could have used windshield wipers for my glasses. Thankfully the wind didn't play a real factor, which is always a big risk on this coastal route. We rode past the Hearst zebras, but they were hiding in the hills somewhere when I went by, but I did see the elephant seals along the beach on the return ride. It ended up being my longest ride of the year and my husband's longest ride ever. I saw a BaseCamp jersey fly past me at the end, but this time yelling "BASECAMP!" didn’t work because he was too fast. 💨 😂 Turns out it was Ron Hill finishing his century route. It was a great weekend!
