Melissa's story: Vermont Gran Fondo

BaseCamp athlete Melissa de Silva shared her experience at the 2025 Vermont Gran Fondo.


Last Saturday I completed the Vermont Gran Fondo Medio Course. The Vermont Gran Fondo had 150, 108, 80 and 40 mile routes. The Medio course had 80 miles (10 of which were gravel) and 5,653 elevation gain. I worked with Coach Greg to prepare. My goals were as follows:


  1. Complete the course

  2. Fuel well

  3. Use my mental strength strategies

  4. Be less conservative with my performance


What did I learn?


  1. I am strong enough to complete a course with this level of demand

  2. I understand my fueling requirements and know what types of foods I can tolerate best

  3. I am beginning to recognize negative self-talk and realize the immense impact it has on my performance


I was happy to meet a fellow BaseCamper at the last rest stop. He did 108 miles! I was happy to see my husband and Coach Greg at the finish line!
