Nancy's story: Tour de Trail Flight 93 Memorial
BaseCamp athlete Nancy Mizak shared her experience at the 2026 Tour de Trail Flight 93 Memorial bike ride in New York.
Most of the time approaching the start of an event brings a sense of excitement and joy. Today’s Flt 93 Memorial Ride was different from other events. I didn’t know what to expect, because I know the emotion that comes up when I have visited the Flt 93 Memorial in the past. The ride was in a beautiful part of Pennsylvania, taking us from Berlin, PA, to Shanksville and back. It was cloudy and wet on the way out to the site but breathtaking nonetheless. I actually enjoyed the hills today (yes, I just said that, ha!). At the memorial site we were honored to have a mother (Debby Borza) whose daughter, Deora Bodley, age 20, was the youngest person to perish in the ultimate sacrifice on Flight 93, as our guest speaker. She shared how much Deora loved the outdoors, including cycling. I couldn’t hold back from tearing up. It was a touching tribute that had me contemplating the whole ride back about how lucky I am to be able to enjoy the outdoors and cycling. As always, I was well prepared to do this event thanks to my awesome coach, Liz Inglese.
