You don't have to set a race goal…but here's why you'll wish you did

Sometimes when I ask an athlete, "What's your goal for this upcoming race?" I hear:


"I don't know. I'm trying not to think about it."


"I just want to finish."


It's not unusual for athletes to shy away from race goals because they feel like too much pressure. And if just thinking about race goals makes your heart race, palms sweat, and stomach turn, it makes sense that you would avoid setting them.


You might be wondering:


Does it matter? Do I really have to have a race goal?


The honest answer is no.


But...


If you've avoided setting race goals in the past, here are three powerful reasons to reconsider.


1. Race goals direct our energy and focus


Once you decide what you want to accomplish, the clarity and commitment helps channel your training efforts and your race-day energy.


The energy the morning of a race can sometimes feel like a bottle of carbonated soda that's been shook up. There is a certain excitement that comes on race day, and all that big energy can create distractions.


A race goal helps anchor us. It acts like a filter, making it easier to focus only on what matters before and during the race. We conserve energy and make sharper decisions when we're not distracted by every little thing around us.


2. Race goals help us persevere through challenges

When we're committed to a goal, it changes how we respond to obstacles. Without that goal commitment, missing a training block, our training partner going MIA, or getting a mid-race curveball like a flat tire or GI issues will feel like an insurmountable brick wall, but it doesn't have to be.


Without a clear goal, it's easy to throw in the towel when something goes wrong. You might catch yourself thinking, Well, I guess the race is already ruined…what's the point? But the race isn't over until it's over. With a goal in place, we're not focused on whether we'll finish; we're focused on how we'll finish. Goals give our brains a reason to adapt, problem solve, and keep moving forward.


3. Race goals help us push when we're ready to call it a day

When our bodies are exhausted and our legs are screaming, it's our mental strength that carries us through.


A clear goal gives us something to fight for when our bodies are ready to give in. Without that target, we're just along for the ride—and that's how regret creeps in. We finish the race and think,


I could have done more.

Why did I hold back?

Why didn’t I push harder?


That's the risk when we race without a goal. We might miss the opportunity to give our full effort. And instead of finishing with pride, we finish with what-ifs.


A specific goal—big or small—helps us dig deeper and finish knowing we gave everything we had.


Is the thought of race-day goals still giving you anxiety?

If setting a race goal makes you sweat, chances are you're only thinking in terms of outcome goals like finishing in a certain time or place.


Outcome goals can feel like high stakes. They invite the "what if I fail?" fears, which can trigger performance anxiety. Avoiding goals becomes a subtle form of self-protection…and self-sabotage.


Try this instead.


Complete these two prompts:


  • I would feel disappointed if I got to the end of my race and…

  • When I get to the end of my race, I want to be able to say…


Then ask: What do I need to focus on during the race to make that happen?


This helps shift us from outcome goals to task-related or process goals—the kind that keep us grounded in the moment. These are the goals that we can control. Even if your big-picture goal is to win, you still need process goals to get there.


Bottom line?

You don't have to set a race goal, but having one helps you race with purpose. Whether you're chasing a personal best, tackling a tough course, or simply aiming to finish strong, your goal becomes the compass that keeps you focused, resilient, and proud of your effort, no matter what happens on the course.
