BaseCamp member Garry Kirkland shared his experience at the Castle to Hanauma Bay Time Trial.
Keeping this short, I had a blast at the TT. I was at a small disadvantage because this TT features about 600ft of climbing, most of which are consolidated to 2 large hills near the end of the run.
I don’t know if I could have done much better. My Garmin indicated that I improved my FTP; my IF was at 1.0, my heart rate and power were in the zones I planned, though the big bombs downhill drop my average watts some. I came in 7th in my age group, and 19th overall. Nothing special, no glory, but I had fun and got to ride fast, so I’ll take it.
This is one of two season opener TTs (of the traditional type) before the big 40k TT in May. My short term goals are to lose another 10 lbs or so, and gain some TTE nearer the 300w range.
Thanks to BaseCamp for the improvements this year, and a special thanks to coaches Kate Johnson, Amber Neben, and Namrita Brooke for your help in getting me dialed in and on the right path.
