BaseCamper Jonathon Fowles shared his experience at the 2023 IKEA Criterium in Nova Scotia.
Race Report: 1st place in the IKEA Kriterom!
Well, after a few 4ths and 3rds in my Omnium on May long weekend, I had a successful race this Canada Day for my second crit race ever.
This is the other key race on the local calendar...and I was happy to learn from my past races to put it all together for the win! (And got to hoist the famous IKEA table stand trophy)…. The parking lot is closed for Canada Day so it great venue for a crit race.
Halfway through I wasn't sure I was going to make it at average speeds above 40k/hr and lots of 500-watt surges but was able to settle in stay patient, play my cards right, and won the final sprint.
Thanks to some race tactics coaching I received from Tim Cusick, Scott Moninger, and
Len Pettyjohn at BaseCamp Mallorca 2023, I was able to position myself correctly and know when to go and out craft some very strong riders. Key one is knowing that others will attack when it is hard and anticipating that and then waiting until they fade to counter. I had good legs and enough gas in the tank to hit my max power when it counted on the final straight.
Great fun!
Again feeling pretty good that most of the field is 20-30 years younger, including the two on the "podium" Ie curb beside me….
