Beth's story: Gravel Worlds

Updated: Oct 8, 2025

BaseCamp athlete Beth Huffaker shared her experience at the 2025 Lauf Gravel Worlds bike race in Nebraska.

First off, I want to congratulate everyone for all the wins out there on Saturday whatever that may have been for you. Well done!!

I'll have to admit this race scared me all summer long. It wasn't the distance, it was the climbing necessary to complete the distance. Because most of you can't grasp how hard it is to climb while carrying a little "extra" on the way up. The granny gears get a workout! There isn't a soft pedal to the top. Picture…well…a cement truck being winched up on to a trailer to understand the shear amount of force and power it takes to top those hills. 🤬 (Thank God for the mullet! 😏)

I just had no idea if I could keep that up all day long, but Menachem understood, and he put a strength and riding plan together that had me finish in way less time than I had planned on, with virtually no pain. Thank you, thank you, thank you! 🙃🙂🙃

Could I have pushed a little harder? Maybe on some downhills, but that's the downside of the mullet, running out of gears.

Lastly, as I always say, the cool part of being at the back of the pack is getting to see the pros zoom by! I watch them and study them to see what makes them go. Just like I watched other athletes as a kid, you know? To see how it's done. Being able to do that now as part of the BaseCamp team is the best feeling in the world! See you on Zwift!
