Joe's story: Commerce Stage Race

BaseCamp alumnus Joe Pomeroy shared his experience at the 2022 Commerce Stage Race in Georgia.

It's been a rather long time since I was able to race in true handcycle road races due to both personal health issues in 2021 and Covid earlier this year. The Commerce Stage Race added handcycle classes this year with RR and TT races on Saturday, June 4, and crit on Sunday the 5th. I've been more focused on gravel and long distance so I had no expectations or pressure put on myself. I took 3rd in the RR, 2nd in the TT, and another 3rd in the crit. I feel I rode well the entire weekend except for a strategy error in the RR which might have cost me 2nd place. The field wasn't big, but two national level fast guys with tons of experience were there in my class. To finish as close as I did to them and beat one in the TT proves the process taught in BaseCamp this winter and continued on with my coach Jim Pomeroy and the whole Velocious Endurance Coaching group works. I still remember thinking during the TT when the pain came "what would Amber Neben do" and suddenly the pain was forgotten. I also learned I need to trust in my own ability and recognize where I can best utilize my strengths when the time is right. Here's a few photos from the weekend.

I would like to thank my sponsors, Joe Pomeroy and Chase VISA card. 😀
