The Devil Is in the Details: Avoid Bike Issues in Solvang

Updated: Oct 20

Solvang is one of the best places in the world to ride a bike, with smooth roads, rolling climbs, and California sunshine. But nothing can derail your experience faster than a small mechanical issue. As we get ready for our cycling camp there, now is the perfect time to give your bike a little extra attention.

Even though we will have a mechanic available at camp, the best way to maximize your experience is to arrive with your bike in great working order. Use this week to go through the following quick maintenance checklist.

ree

1. Check Your Brakes

Inspect both your brake pads and rotors. Make sure there is enough pad material left and that the rotors are clean, true, and not worn thin. Test the brakes for smooth, firm engagement because you will need them on Solvang's descents.

2. Inspect Tires and Refresh Sealant

Look for cuts, cracks, or excessive wear in your tires. For tubeless setups, check sealant levels, because it dries out over time. A little maintenance now can prevent the frustration of a flat during a ride. Remember, we want no flats in Solvang.

3. Tighten Water Bottle Cages

It is easy to overlook, but bottle cage bolts can loosen with vibration over time. Give them a quick snug to avoid losing a bottle on the road.

4. Check Crank and Bottom Bracket

Spin your cranks and feel for any side-to-side play. If you notice movement, tighten the crank bolt or have a shop give it a once over. A secure crank means better power transfer and fewer creaks.

5. Inspect Saddle and Rails

Examine your saddle for any cracks, tears, or worn spots, and check the rails for damage or bending. Give the saddle a firm wrench with your hands to confirm everything is tight and solid.

6. Check Grips and Shifters

Ensure your grips and shifters are tight and comfortable. Loose grips or shifting controls can quickly become a distraction or a safety issue.

7. Charge Batteries and Pack Chargers

Fully charge all your electronic components before camp, including electronic shifting, power meters, and bike computers. Be sure to pack all your chargers so you can keep everything powered up throughout the week.

A few minutes of attention this week can save you a lot of time and frustration once camp begins. Think of it as part of your pre camp preparation. The details matter and they make a big difference in how much you can enjoy every mile in Solvang.
